IIT Chennai to be part of CERN

CERN CMSChennai (ISJ) - Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai has been admitted to join the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment of European Laboratory for Particle Physics, CERN. India has been part of the CMS experiment since its inception. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, National Institute of Science Education & Research, Pune, Universities of Delhi and Punjab are already full members of CERN. This year the agency has admitted IIT, Chennai and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune as full members of CMS experiment.

"This will open up a tremendous opportunity for us not only in the area of Physics but also in a large number of related technologies which are initiated and applied at CERN," said IIT Chennai, in a statement.

CERN laboratory sits astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe's first joint ventures and now has 21 member states. India is an associate member of CERN.

CERN is well-known for the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012. The world-wide-web (www) was also invented at CERN. CERN is not only an international laboratory for fundamental research in experimental high energy physics but also provides a platform for innovation in technology through international collaboration. The two experiments that discovered Higgs boson are ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) and CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid).

IIT Chennai, the only IIT to be a full member of the CMS experiment, is now part of one of the biggest international collaboration involving more than 3000 scientists, engineers, and students from 172 institutes in 40 countries. Its students and research scholars will now get an opportunity to directly participate in research in fundamental Physics, related technologies and developments in grid computing. The data produced in this experiment is processed through grid computing centers located all over world.
