Investment in core research to see quantum jump: Dr. Harsh Vardhan

Harsh Vardhan 2909Guwahati (ISJ) ? India's National Democratic Alliance government plans to scale up investment in core research substantially to realize the goal of 'Make in India' a reality. Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, scientific and technological self-reliance are closely linked to national sovereignty and the development of national character.

"We have suffered enough brain-drain because of our unwillingness to think out of the box and visualise great national objectives. We are now determined to put India on the high road to self-reliance," Dr Harsh Vardhan told scientists of Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology in Guwahati on Monday (Nov. 17).

Dr. Harsh Vadhan said the Narendra Modi government will soon initiate a national consultation to draw up the first publicly accessible Science and Technology policy ? Vision S&T 2020, which will articulate the road ahead towards self-reliance and technological independence in the 21st Century. He claimed, the recent decision of the government to cancel global tenders for defence purchases was spurred by its plan to promote Indian R&D to build helicopters, transport aircraft and submarines.

"We are presently the world's biggest importer of defence equipment. Thanks to our purchases world powers get rich and their children get jobs. Within a few years this will change," said Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

The minister said, 'Make in India' project of the Prime Minister is not an empty rhetoric, but reviving what was an old, discarded slogan into a "doable" project. Therefore, investment into core research is going to see manifold increase in the coming years.
